Sulfates have become the designated villain of clean beauty — the ingredient a “sulfate-free” claim exists to distance a product from, blamed for everything from dryness to hair loss to, in the more excitable corners of the internet, cancer. Most of that is wrong, or at least badly overstated. Sulfates are not toxic in the sense the fear implies, and the acute-danger framing distracts from the real issue, which is quieter, slower, and more relevant to how skin actually behaves.
The genuine problem with sulfates is not what a single wash does. It is what months of washes do — the cumulative effect of a highly effective cleansing agent that is very good at removing oil, and not selective about which oils it removes. A single exposure to a sulfate cleanser will not damage a healthy barrier in any lasting way. The barrier is built to recover from exactly that kind of insult. The question that matters is what happens when the insult is repeated twice a day, every day, indefinitely — and whether the barrier ever gets the window it needs to fully rebuild.
“Over time” is the operative phrase, and it is the part the villain-versus-hero framing consistently misses. Understanding what sulfates actually do — mechanically, at the level of the barrier, across repeated use — is what makes it possible to decide whether they belong in the one product you use more often than any other.

Sulfates are anionic surfactants — surface-active molecules that make cleansing possible. The two most common in skincare are sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and its gentler relative sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). A surfactant works because one end of the molecule is attracted to water and the other end is attracted to oil. That dual nature lets it surround the oil, dirt, and sebum on the skin, lift them away from the surface, and carry them off when you rinse. It is also what produces the dense, satisfying foam that most people have been trained to read as evidence of cleaning.
Sulfates are genuinely good at this. They are powerful, cheap, and reliable, which is exactly why they became the default in cleansers, shampoos, and body washes for decades. The trouble is not that they fail to clean. It is the opposite — they clean indiscriminately. A surfactant that aggressively strips oil does not distinguish between the excess sebum you want gone and the structural lipids your barrier needs to stay intact. It takes both.

That reliability as a test irritant is a useful signal about what it does to a barrier under repeated exposure.

Healthy skin sits at a slightly acidic pH, around 4.5 to 5.5, which supports the barrier’s lipid organization and its resident microbiome. Sulfate cleansers tend to be alkaline and push skin pH upward. Combined with lipid loss, the result is elevated transepidermal water loss — moisture escaping through a compromised barrier faster than it should. That is the tight, dry, slightly raw feeling after washing. It is not cleanliness. It is a barrier that has temporarily lost some of its ability to hold water.

If cleansing happened once a week, sulfates would be a non-issue for most people. The barrier would recover fully between exposures and never fall behind.
But cleansing does not happen once a week. It happens twice a day, every day, for years. Each wash starts a small repair project the barrier has to complete before the next wash begins the disruption again. When the disruption is mild, the barrier keeps pace and stays intact. When it is aggressive and relentless, the repair never quite finishes before the next insult arrives — and the barrier settles into a state of chronic, low-grade compromise. Not damaged in any dramatic, visible way. Just perpetually a step behind, running a deficit it can never fully close.
This is why the cleanser is the product where surfactant choice matters most. It is used more frequently than anything else in the routine, so any barrier disruption it causes is delivered at the highest possible frequency. A harsh serum used once a day disrupts the barrier once a day. A harsh cleanser disrupts it twice — and it is the one product almost nobody skips. The frequency is precisely what turns a mild, individually-recoverable insult into a cumulative one.
The single most persistent misunderstanding about cleansing is that the tight, squeaky feeling afterward is the sensation of skin being clean. It is not. That feeling is the barrier signalling that it has been stripped past the point of simply removing dirt and excess oil — it is the sound, so to speak, of lost lipids and elevated water loss. SLES is meaningfully milder than SLS. Sulfate-free surfactant systems can be gentler still. But “sulfate-free” is a statement about one category of ingredient the product does not contain — not a guarantee about what it does. A cleanser can be sulfate-free and still built on other harsh surfactants that strip the barrier in much the same way. The absence of one aggressive ingredient does not confirm the presence of a gentle formula.
What actually determines whether a cleanser respects the barrier is the specific surfactant system it is built on, the pH it is formulated to, and whether it was designed to clean effectively without over-stripping.
