Botanical vs. Synthetic Calming Agents: What Reactive Skin Responds To

There is a persistent assumption in skincare that natural ingredients are gentler and synthetic ones are harsher — that botanical means safe and lab-made means aggressive. It is an intuitive framing and a mostly incorrect one. Some of the most sensitizing ingredients in cosmetics are botanical: essential oils, citrus extracts, and certain plant-derived fragrances are among the leading causes of contact dermatitis. Some of the most reliably tolerated calming agents are synthetic. The natural-versus-synthetic binary tells you very little about how an ingredient behaves on reactive skin.
